Jan Štohanzl

Jan Štohanzl (1948, Přibyslav) is one of the most distinctive figures in Czech studio glass. His lifelong practice is rooted in a masterful command of fused and cut glass sculpture.
Already during his studies at the glass school in Železný Brod under Professor Ladislav Oliva, it was clear that he was no ordinary craftsman. Štohanzl approaches glass as a quiet space in which light, rhythm and time can be captured.
In his objects — whether paperweights, pyramids or optical totems, Štohanzl combines mathematical precision with a poetics of silence. Minimalist forms, clean lines and a masterful command of light and colour define his work. Each piece conveys humility, patience and deep concentration..
Since the 1970s, he has taken part in international exhibitions in Kassel, Västerås and Budapest. He has also held solo exhibitions in Chotěboř and Leerdam. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout Europe. And yet he remains in the background, with no need for self-display — a glass artist who lets his work speak for itself.
His work appeals both to connoisseurs of studio glass and to collectors drawn to quiet strength. An understated beauty that does not age.
