Bohumil Eliáš jr.

Bohumil Eliáš Jr. (1980) forged his own path, despite growing up in the shadow of his famous father. After studying at the glass school in Kamenický Šenov, he chose figurative sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Jan Hendrych, graduating in 2007. From the very beginning, he has combined the world of glass with the sensibility of a sculptor.

His work moves between glass, painting and sculptural materials. He works with fused glass, painted and layered glass panels, as well as bronze. His approach avoids the expressive use of colour and dramatic narratives typical of his father’s work. Instead, he replaces them with an austere harmony of forms, fragments and compositions.

Eliáš’s sculptures evoke architectural elements — windows, bridges, remnants of ancient structures. Light passes through the monochrome glass, lending the works an air of quiet mystery. At other times, he works with details of industrial components or cast elements, incorporating them into monumental compositions. His objects appear like unearthed fragments of lost civilisations.

A similar sense of reduction and rigour also characterises his painting. Geometric forms and rhythmically arranged fragments of structures create abstract compositions that resonate with his work in glass.

Bohumil Eliáš Jr. is one of the most distinctive artists of his generation. His work demonstrates that continuing a family tradition does not mean imitation, but rather finding an authentic artistic language of one’s own — restrained, direct and firmly rooted in space and light.
