Tomáš Hlavička

Tomáš Hlavička was born in Prague in 1950 and, at first glance, might seem to have followed the path of a conventional architect trained at the Czech Technical University in Prague. His life, however, changed dramatically after meeting the renowned glass artist Pavel Hlava, who opened the door to the world of glass for him. This encounter became a turning point in his career and enabled him to master the precise techniques of cutting and working with glass.

His early work focused on assembling sheets of glass, creating striking effects through refraction of light and a dynamic sense of movement. Gradually, he began incorporating strips of gold and silver leaf into his pieces, adding another layer of visual richness to his work.

Hlavička’s current work focuses on disciplined stereometric forms, shaped through cutting and grinding to create illusory spaces within solid blocks of glass. His works are defined by a fascinating contrast between strict geometric form and the vitality of the complex structures that run through them.

He draws inspiration from both nature and the human world. His work refers to simple natural elements — pools with reeds, the shimmer of fish scales — as well as symbolic boats carrying archetypal feminine motifs. He transforms familiar forms into rare glass relics that draw us into their mysterious inner world.

His awards include an Honourable Mention in Koganezaki, Japan, the European Prize in Prague–Brussels, and the Bavarian State Prize in Munich. His works are represented in the collections of major museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Glass Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
